Why is Ceftin prescribed?

Ceftin (Cefuroxime) is a type of cephalosporin antibiotic. It is commonly prescribed to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including skin infections, middle ear infections, tonsillitis, throat infections, laryngitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and gonorrhea.

What does it do?

Cefuroxime works by inhibiting the ability of certain bacteria to form their cell wall, leading to their destruction. However, this medication is ineffective against colds, the flu, or other viral infections.

How should I take it?

Take Ceftin exactly as prescribed by your doctor based on your diagnosis. Follow all instructions on your prescription and review any medication guides or instruction sheets provided.

The tablets are usually taken orally every 12 hours, though the dosage may vary depending on the type of infection and your kidney function.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take only the next scheduled dose. Do not double dose.

It’s important to finish the full course of Cefuroxime as prescribed, even if you start feeling better or your symptoms disappear. This helps reduce the risk of future infections becoming resistant to Cefuroxime or other similar antibiotics.

What are the special precautions before taking Ceftin?

You should not use Ceftin if you are allergic to Penicillin, Cefuroxime, or any other Cephalosporin antibiotics (such as Keflex, Omnicef, Cefdinir, Cefalexin, and others).

To ensure Ceftin is safe for you, inform your doctor if you have a history of:

  • Kidney disease
  • Malnutrition
  • Liver disease
  • Stomach or intestinal issues, like colitis
Also, let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Antibiotics like Ceftin can cause diarrhea, which may indicate a new infection. If you experience watery or bloody diarrhea, contact your doctor. Do not take anti-diarrheal medication unless advised by your doctor.

Cefuroxime can interfere with certain medical tests, including urine glucose tests. Be sure to tell any healthcare provider that you're using this medication.

Does it have any side effects?

Seek emergency medical attention if you experience signs of an allergic reaction to Ceftin, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling in your face or throat, or if you develop a severe skin reaction (burning eyes, skin pain, fever, sore throat, and a red or purple rash that spreads, blisters, or peels).

    Common side effects may include:
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever and body aches
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Vaginal itching or discharge
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Fever, chills, headache, or muscle pain
  • Hearing problems
  • Seizures
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
  • Lightheadedness or the feeling of fainting
  • Severe stomach pain or diarrhea that is watery or bloody (even if it occurs months after your last dose)
  • Kidney issues, such as little or no urination, painful or difficult urination, swelling in the feet or ankles, fatigue, or shortness of breath
  • This is not a complete list of side effects, and others may occur. For medical advice regarding side effects, contact your doctor.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Always inform your healthcare provider about any prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, minerals, herbal products, or other supplements you are taking.

In particular, be sure to discuss if you are using any of the following before starting cefuroxime:
  • Antacids containing calcium, aluminum, or magnesium
  • Probenecid, a medication commonly used to treat gout
  • H2 blockers, such as Famotidine (Pepcid, Zantac), Cimetidine (Tagamet), or Nizatidine (Axid)
  • Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), such as Omeprazole (Prilosec), Pantoprazole (Protonix), Esomeprazole (Nexium), Lansoprazole (Prevacid), or Rabeprazole (Aciphex)
  • This may not be a complete list of medications that could interact with Cefuroxime, so always consult with your healthcare provider.

    How should I store it?

Cefuroxime tablets should be stored at room temperature, between 68°F and 77°F (20°C to 25°C). It can be briefly exposed to temperatures between 59°F and 86°F (15°C to 30°C), such as during transportation. Keep the medication in a cool, dry place.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you or someone else has taken too much Ceftin, seek immediate medical assistance or go to the nearest hospital. Symptoms of an overdose may include seizures.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Pregnancy: The impact of cefuroxime on pregnancy or an unborn baby is not fully known. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, inform your healthcare provider. They will provide guidance on whether it’s safe to take Cefuroxime during pregnancy or while trying to conceive.

Breastfeeding: Cefuroxime can pass into breast milk. If you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed, let your healthcare provider know. They will advise you on whether it's safe to use Cefuroxime while nursing.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
