Why is Depakine prescribed?

Depakine (Valproic acid) is an anticonvulsant used to treat different types of seizure disorders. It is sometimes prescribed in combination with other seizure medications.

What does it do?

Depakine (Valproic acid) is an antiepileptic drug that works by restoring the balance of specific natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain.

How should I take it?

Take Depakine orally as prescribed by your doctor. The daily dose is 15 mg/kg/day, and the maximum recommended dosage is 60 mg/kg/day. It may cause your stomach upset; you may take it with food. Swallow the capsule whole, as this may irritate your mouth or throat.

What if I missed a dose?

If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible, unless it's nearly time for the next dose. Do not double dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Depakine?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history.

Do not take this medication if you:

  • Have liver problems
  • Have a genetic disorder called urea cycle disorder
  • Have or suspect you have a genetic liver condition caused by a mitochondrial disorder (e.g., Alpers-Huttenlocher syndrome)
  • Are allergic to divalproex sodium, sodium valproate, valproic acid, or any of the ingredients in this medication
  • Are using it to prevent migraines and are pregnant, or may become pregnant and are not using effective birth control (contraception)
  • This medication may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can increase these effects, making you feel even more dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive or engage in activities requiring alertness or clear vision until you are able to do so safely.

If you experience symptoms of liver problems or pancreatitis, such as persistent nausea or vomiting, weakness, stomach pain, loss of appetite, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes, contact your doctor immediately.

Does it have any side effects?

Like all medications, Valproic acid can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. Continue taking the medication, but speak to your doctor if any of the following side effects bother you or don't go away:
      Common side effects may include:
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Feeling tired or drowsy
  • Irregular or delayed periods
  • Stomach pain, nausea, or vomiting
  • Shaking (tremors) in a part of your body or unusual eye movements
    • Serious side effects may include:
  • Thoughts of harming or killing yourself – some individuals taking valproic acid have had suicidal thoughts
  • Yellowing of the whites of your eyes or skin (which may be less noticeable on brown or black skin) and dark urine – these may indicate liver problems
  • Severe, persistent nausea or stomach pain – these could be signs of acute pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • Unusual bruising or bleeding – this could be a sign of a blood disorder
  • This list does not include all possible side effects, and other effects may occur. For more information on side effects, consult your doctor.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Drug interactions can alter how your medications work or increase the risk of serious side effects. This document does not list all potential drug interactions. Do not start, stop, or adjust the dosage of any medication without your doctor's approval.

Inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following:

  • Antibiotics, such as Erythromycin
  • Aspirin for pain relief or low-dose aspirin
  • Medications for treating HIV and AIDS, such as Ritonavir
  • Blood thinners, such as Warfarin
  • Cimetidine, a medication for stomach ulcers
  • Medications for depression or other mental health conditions, such as Venlafaxine
  • Cholesterol-lowering medications, such as Cholestyramine
  • Medications to prevent malaria, such as Mefloquine
  • Other medications for epilepsy, such as Carbamazepine
  • How should I store it?

Store the medication at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Do not store it in the bathroom. Keep all medications out of reach of children.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If someone overdoses and experiences severe symptoms like fainting or difficulty breathing, seek emergency medical help immediately.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Depakine is not recommended for use during pregnancy, as it may cause birth defects. However, since untreated seizures can be dangerous for both the pregnant woman and her fetus, do not stop taking this medication without your doctor's guidance. Your doctor may switch you to a different medication during pregnancy.

Depakine passes into breast milk. Although there have been no reports of harm to nursing infants, consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
