Why is Edecrin prescribed?

Edecrin (Ethacrynic Acid) is a loop diuretic prescribed to treat fluid retention (Edema) in individuals with conditions like liver disease, congestive heart failure, or kidney disorders such as nephrotic syndrome.

What does it do?

Ethacrynic acid works by increasing urine production. It helps the kidneys eliminate electrolytes, such as sodium (salt), and water from the body.

How should I take it?

Take this medication by mouth, usually after a meal, unless your doctor advises otherwise. Edecrin will increase urination, and you may become dehydrated more easily. Be sure to follow your doctor's guidance regarding potassium supplements or ensuring you get enough salt and potassium in your diet.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it's nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take only the scheduled one. Do not double dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Edecrin?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history.

To ensure Edecrin is safe for you, inform your doctor if you have:

  • An electrolyte imbalance
  • Kidney disease
  • Gout
  • Heart disease
  • Cirrhosis or other liver conditions
  • If you are following a low-salt diet

You should not use Edecrin if you are allergic to it, or if:

  • You are unable to urinate
  • You have recently experienced severe watery diarrhea
Edecrin is not approved for use by individuals under 18 years old.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
    Common side effects may include:
  • Blurred vision
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Fever or chills
  • Headache or feeling tired
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or other stomach discomfort
  • Loss of appetite
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Hearing problems or a feeling of fullness in your ear
  • Severe or watery diarrhea
  • Low potassium, indicated by leg cramps, constipation, or muscle weakness
  • Low sodium, which can cause headache, confusion, or a feeling of unsteadiness
  • Weight loss
This is not a complete list of side effects. Contact your doctor for medical advice if you experience any side effects.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Some drug interactions may cause serious or life-threatening reactions when administered together. Immediately inform your doctor if you are taking Edecrin with any of the following medications:
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs like indomethacin
  • Certain antibiotics administered by injection
  • Diuretics
  • Lithium
  • Medications for diabetes
  • Medications for high blood pressure
  • Heart medications like digoxin
  • Hormones such as Fludrocortisone, Cortisone, or Hydrocortisone
  • Warfarin
This is not a complete list of possible interactions. Provide your healthcare provider with a full list of all medications you are taking.

How should I store it?

Store the medication in a tightly closed container at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight. Do not allow it to freeze.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you believe you have taken too much of this medication, immediately contact your doctor or go to the emergency room as it can cause dizziness and faintness.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Edecrin should only be used during pregnancy if prescribed by your doctor. It is not known whether this medication passes into breast milk, so consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
