Why is Exjade prescribed?

Exjade (Deferasirox) is an iron-chelating agent that binds to excess iron in the bloodstream and helps remove it. It is used to treat iron overload caused by blood transfusions in adults and children aged 2 years and older.

What does it do?

Exjade (Deferasirox) works by binding to excess iron, enabling the body to eliminate it through the stool. It is classified as an iron-chelating agent.

How should I take it?

Take Exjade on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before meal. The dose maybe adjusted based on your weight and how much iron is in the blood.

Do not chew, crush, or swallow the Exjade dispersible tablet whole. Instead, place the tablet into a glass of apple juice, orange juice, or water, and let it disperse in the liquid. The tablet will not fully dissolve. Drink the mixture immediately. To ensure you consume the full dose, add a little more liquid to the same glass, swirl gently, and drink it right away.

What if I missed a dose?

Take Exjade as soon as you remember, but if it's nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Exjade?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history.

You should not use Exjade if you are allergic to Deferasirox or if you have:

  • Advanced cancer
  • Severe liver or kidney disease
  • A bone marrow disorder
  • Low platelet levels in your blood

Inform your doctor if you have a history of:

  • Anemia (low red blood cells)
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Stomach ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Cancer (especially blood-related cancers like leukemia)
  • A weakened immune system due to conditions like HIV, or AIDS, cancer, or from treatments such as chemotherapy, steroids, or radiation

Exjade may reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills. Ask your doctor about using non-hormonal birth control methods (such as condoms or a diaphragm with spermicide) to prevent pregnancy.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.

    Common side effects may include:
  • Diarrhea
  • Skin rash
  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Vision or hearing problems
  • Kidney issues, such as little or no urination or swelling in your feet
  • Liver problems, including upper stomach pain, clay-colored stools, or jaundice
  • Low blood cell counts, indicated by fever, easy bruising, unusual bleeding, or short of breath
  • Signs of stomach bleeding, such as bloody or tarry stools

Serious side effects may be more common in older adults.

This is not a complete list of side effects, and others may occur. Contact your doctor for medical advice about side effects.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

This document does not list all potential drug interactions. Keep a record of all the products you use, including prescription and over-the-counter medications and share this list with your doctor and pharmacist. Never start, stop, or adjust the dosage of any medication without consulting your doctor first.

Certain products may interact with this medication, including the following

  • Blood thinners (e.g., Warfarin)
  • Fezolinetant
  • NSAIDs (e.g., Ibuprofen)
  • Other drugs that can cause bleeding or bruising, such as antiplatelet drugs (e.g., Clopidogrel)

Aspirin may increase the risk of bleeding when used with this drug. However, if your doctor has advised you to take low-dose aspirin (usually 81-162 mg daily) to prevent heart attack or stroke, you should continue taking it unless directed otherwise by your doctor. For more details, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

This medication can slow the elimination of other drugs from your body, potentially affecting how they work. One example is Tovorafenib, among others.

This drug may reduce the effectiveness of hormonal birth control methods, such as patches, pills, or rings, increasing the risk of pregnancy. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist about whether you should use backup contraception.

Additionally, inform your doctor if you experience new spotting or breakthrough bleeding, as this may indicate your birth control is less effective.

How should I store it?

Store Exjade at room temperature. Keep all medications away from children.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If someone has taken an excessive amount of Exjade and is experiencing severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, contact a doctor immediately. If not, proceed to the nearest hospital.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Exjade should only be used during pregnancy if prescribed by your doctor. It is unclear whether Exjade passes into breast milk, so consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
