Why is Ganfort Eye Drops prescribed?

Ganfort Eye Drops (Bimatoprost/ Timolol Maleate) is a combination two medications to help lower eye pressure, commonly used in the treatment of glaucoma and ocular hypertension.

What does it do?

Ganfort Eye Drops (Bimatoprost/ Timolol Maleate) works by reducing the fluid pressure inside the eye (aqueous humor), thereby helping to lower elevated eye pressure.

How should I take it?

These drops are intended for use in the affected eyes only. It may be more comfortable to apply them while sitting or lying down. Do not use the drops while wearing soft contact lenses. You can put your contact lenses back in 15 minutes after using Ganfort eye drops.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose of Ganfort Eye Drops, simply skip it and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not use a double dose to make up for the missed one.

What are the special precautions before taking Ganfort Eye Drops ?

Before using this medicine, inform your doctor if you currently have or have had any of the following conditions:
  • A history of severe allergic reactions
  • Liver or kidney disorders
  • Issues with the surface of the eye
  • Irregular heart rhythms, such as a slow heartbeat
  • Diabetes, since Timolol can mask signs of low blood sugar
  • Retinal detachment following eye surgery for pressure reduction
  • Coronary heart disease (symptoms may include chest pain, shortness of breath, or a choking sensation), heart failure, or low blood pressure
  • Breathing issues, including asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Poor blood circulation (e.g., Raynaud’s disease or Raynaud’s syndrome)
  • An overactive thyroid, as timolol may hide symptoms of thyroid problems
  • Risk factors for macular oedema (retinal swelling that can lead to vision loss), such as a history of cataract surgery

Make sure to tell your doctor if you’re planning to have surgery with anaesthesia, as Timolol in Ganfort may alter the effects of certain anaesthetic medications.

Ganfort may also cause cosmetic changes, such as longer and darker eyelashes, darkening of the eyelid skin, and gradual darkening of the iris (the coloured part of the eye). These effects may be permanent and are often more noticeable when only one eye is treated. Additionally, Ganfort can cause unwanted hair growth if it comes into contact with the skin.

Does it have any side effects?

All medications can cause side effects, though most are mild and short-lived. However, some may require medical attention. Talk to your doctor if any of the following less serious side effects bother you:

Effects on the eyes:

  • Dryness
  • Discomfort or burning sensation
  • Watery eyes
  • Itching or irritation
  • The sensation of something in the eye
  • Redness or swelling in or around the eye
  • Sensitivity to bright light

General body effects:

  • Cold-like symptoms (e.g., runny or blocked nose)
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Loss of appetite
Serious side effects on eyes may include:
  • Eye pain
  • Eye discharge
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Small spots on the eye surface

General body effects:

  • Asthma or worsening of asthma symptoms
  • Slow heart rate
  • Shortness of breath
  • High blood pressure
If you notice any other symptoms that make you feel unwell, speak to your doctor or pharmacist. Not all side effects are listed, and others may occur in some individuals.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Some medicines can interact with Ganfort eye drops, either affecting how the drops work or being affected by them. Ganfort eye drops may enhance the effects of certain medications, such as:
  • Antidepressants
  • Some diabetes medications
  • Medicines for high blood pressure
  • Certain treatments for heart conditions, including those for irregular heartbeats
  • Vasodilators (medications that widen blood vessels)
Because of these potential interactions, your doctor may need to adjust your medication doses or switch you to different treatments. If you're unsure whether your current medicines, vitamins, or supplements might interact with Ganfort eye drops, it's best to check with your doctor or pharmacist.

How should I store it?

Keep it in a cool, dry place, away from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight. Make sure to discard the bottle 28 days after opening.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you use too much Ganfort eye drops, rinse your eyes right away with warm water. If the drops are accidentally swallowed, contact your doctor or go to the nearest emergency department immediately. Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or think you might be, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine. Ganfort should not be used during pregnancy unless your doctor specifically advises it.

Do not use Ganfort while breastfeeding, as Timolol may pass into breast milk. Always consult your doctor before taking any medication while breastfeeding.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
