Why is Geodon prescribed?

Ziprasidone (Geodon) is being prescribed in combination with other medications for the treatment of bipolar disorders, acute agitation and schizophrenia.

What does it do?

Ziprasidone, a second-generation anti-psychotic agent and possess antihistamine effect, primarily works by blocking certain chemicals in the brain such as Norepinephrine and Serotonin reabsorption; thus, helping the restoration of the balance of chemicals in the brain.

How should I take it?

Geodon and its generic equivalents are available as 20mg, 40mg, 60mg and 80mg capsules. It is intended for oral administration as a whole, not to be crushed or chewed, and should be taken with food as directed by the doctor.

The dosage strength depends on every patient’s condition and the doctor’s prescription. It is strictly advised that you do not self-medicate and only take this drug after consulting with your doctor or pharmacist to determine the best dosage and dosing schedule for the treatment of your condition.

What if I missed a dose?

Taking the dose properly at the scheduled time is needed to attain the desired effect of the drug. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and catch the next dose at the regular time. Do not take two doses just to make up for your missed dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Geodon?

Before taking Ziprasidone, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any allergies to food or to the drug itself as it may contain several inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or problems.

Inform your doctor about your past and current medical history especially if you have or have had dementia, seizures, heart disease, dysphagia, diabetes, coronary artery disease, low white blood cell count and sleep apnea.

Avoid drinking alcohol as this may cause dizziness and drowsiness which can add to the effects of Ziprasidone.

Consult your doctor regarding all the other medications you use before getting a surgery.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

There are only limited studies and data regarding the safety of Ziprasidone to determine drug-associated risks of major maternal defects, miscarriages and fetal outcomes. In addition, extrapyramidal and withdrawal symptoms after delivery were seen during the exposure of neonates in the third trimester. However, as per US FDA, Ziprasidone is categorized as Pregnancy Category C which states that there is no potential harm and well-controlled studies have been done in humans; but animal studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus.

Limited data have been established indicating the presence of Ziprasidone in human milk. Infants who are exposed to the drug are reported to experience irritability, excess sedation and abnormal muscle movement. Consult your doctor first before breastfeeding.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
