Why is Hydrea prescribed?

Hydrea (Hydroxyurea) is prescribed for treating chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), a type of cancer affecting white blood cells. It can also be used in combination with radiation therapy for cancer of the head and neck. Hydroxyurea works by disrupting the growth of cancer cells, which are eventually eliminated by the body. In patients with sickle cell anemia, hydroxyurea helps prevent painful episodes and reduces the need for blood transfusions by making red blood cells more flexible.

What does it do?

Hydrea (Hydroxyurea) is used by people with sickle cell anemia to lessen the frequency of painful crises and decrease the need for blood transfusions. Additionally, this medication is prescribed for treating specific cancers and can be used alone or in combination with other anti tumor agents and radiation.

What does it do?

Hydrea (Hydroxyurea) is taken orally and dosage depends on your weight, medical condition, lab results, and response to treatment. Treatment may be temporarily halted if your blood counts drop too low.

Do not increase your dose, use the medication more frequently, or extend the duration of use beyond what is prescribed..

If you are using capsules, swallow them whole do not crush, chew, or open them because they are a cytotoxic drug.

Always wash your hands before and after handling the medication or its container. Use disposable gloves when handling the medication or its container. If the powder spills, clean it up immediately with a wet cloth and dispose of it in a sealed container like a plastic bag. Clean the spill area with soap and water right away.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's close to the time of your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

What are the special precautions before using Hydrea?

Hydrea (Hydroxyurea) can reduce bone marrow function, which may lead to a low count of blood cells, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. This event can result in anemia, increased susceptibility to infections, or easy bruising and bleeding. Your doctor will closely monitor your condition while you are on this medication.

Hydroxyurea may also increase the risk of developing other cancers, such as secondary leukemia or skin cancer. To protect your skin, avoid excessive sun exposure, tanning beds, and sunlamps. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outside. Contact your doctor right away if you notice any cancer symptoms, such as swollen lymph nodes, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, or unusual skin growths or moles.

Hydroxyurea can increase your susceptibility to infections or worsen existing ones. Avoid close contact with individuals who have contagious infections like chickenpox, COVID-19, measles, or the flu.

Notify your healthcare provider that you are using hydroxyurea before receiving any vaccinations. Avoid contact with individuals who have recently had live vaccines, such as the nasal flu vaccine.

It is not known if hydroxyurea affects sperm. If you plan to conceive a child, discuss the potential risks and benefits of this medication with your doctor.

Before using hydroxyurea, provide your doctor or pharmacist with your medical history, particularly if you have any allergies, including this medication or any other substances.

Does it have any side effects?

While this medication can be effective, it may also cause some unwanted side effects. Not all these side effects will necessarily occur, but if they do, they might require medical attention.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If someone has overdosed with Hydroxyurea and exhibits acute mucocutaneous toxicity make sure to inform your doctor for immediate medical attention.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. You should avoid pregnancy while taking hydroxyurea, as it could harm an unborn baby. Women should discuss effective birth control methods with their doctor during treatment and for 6 months after the last dose. Men should also seek advice on reliable birth control methods during treatment and for 1 year after stopping the medication. If either you or your partner becomes pregnant, consult your doctor immediately to discuss the risks and benefits of continuing the medication.

Hydroxyurea can pass into breast milk and may be harmful to a nursing baby. It is advised not to breastfeed while on this medication. Speak with your doctor before starting breastfeeding.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
