Why is Jakafi prescribed?

Jakafi (Ruxolitinib) is used to treat chronic idiopathic myelofibrosis and polycythemia vera.

What does it do?

Jakafi is an anti-cancer medication that works by inhibiting the abnormal protein responsible for signaling cancer cells to grow. This helps to prevent or slow the spread of cancer cells.

How should I take it?

Take Jakafi exactly as prescribed by your doctor based on your condition. The starting dose of Jakafi in PV is 10mg twice a day and for Myelofibrosis will be based on your platelet count. Jakafi can be taken with or without food, but it’s best to take it at the same time each day.

Complete blood count, including a white blood cell count differential, before starting this medication and monitoring is needed after 2 weeks.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss Jakafi, take it as soon as possible. If it's nearly time for your next dose, just take that one. Do not double dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Jakafi?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history.

Before taking Jakafi, inform your healthcare provider if you:

  • Have an infection
  • Have any other medical conditions
  • Have or have had liver or kidney problems
  • Are on dialysis (take Jakavi after dialysis)
  • Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant (the effects on an unborn baby are unknown)
  • Are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed (it is unclear if Jakafi passes into breast milk; you should not breastfeed while taking Jakafi)
Specifically mention if you're taking medications for:
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Fungal infections
  • Bacterial infections

If you're unsure whether a medicine falls into these categories, ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist. Keep an updated list of all your medications to share with your provider and pharmacist when starting a new medication.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • Blood clot (chest pain, swelling, or warmth)
  • Unusual bruising or bleeding
  • Heart attack (chest, neck, trouble breathing, unusual fatigue)
  • Infection (fever, chills, or difficult urination)
  • Stroke (speech difficulties, trouble walking, dizziness, loss of coordination)

Side effects that are typically not serious but should be reported if persistent or bothersome include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Muscle cramps
  • Swelling in the arms or legs
This list may not include all possible side effects. Contact your doctor for advice on any side effects you experience.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
