Why is Linessa prescribed?

Linessa (Desogestrel / Ethinyl Estradiol) is a combination oral contraceptive commonly used to prevent pregnancy.

What does it do?

It works by stopping ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary) and altering the cervical mucus to make it harder for sperm to enter and for an egg to implant. It can also be used to help regulate the menstrual cycle.

How should I take it?

For the 28-day pack: Take one active pill daily for 21 days, followed by one "reminder" (inactive) pill daily for 7 days. After that, begin the next pack..

Your doctor will advise you on the best day to start—either on Day 1 of your period or the first Sunday after your period begins. Be sure to take your pill at the same time each day for the best results..

What if I missed a dose?

Follow the Patient Labeling instructions carefully, as the guidance varies based on how many tablets you missed and when. You might need to use backup contraception or avoid sex to ensure protection.

What are the special precautions before taking Linessa?

Before starting desogestrel/ethinyl estradiol, inform your doctor about your medical history, allergies, current medications, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, and any other relevant health conditions, as these factors can influence how the medication affects you.
  • Breast Cancer: There may be a slightly higher risk of developing breast cancer, especially in long-term users or those with a family history. Birth control pills might also speed up the growth of an undiagnosed tumor. Regular breast exams are advised.
  • Cervical Cancer: Long-term use may slightly increase the risk of cervical cancer, though this may be related to other factors like HPV infection and sexual activity.
  • High Blood Pressure: Hormonal contraceptives can raise blood pressure. If you have or are at risk for high blood pressure, your doctor may monitor you more closely or consider other options.
  • Blood Clots: This medication increases the risk of blood clots. Inform your doctor if you have a history of clots or are at risk due to long-term immobility, surgery, or health conditions. Seek immediate help if you experience chest pain, leg swelling, or sudden weakness—these may be signs of a clot.
  • Smoking and Heart Disease: Smoking significantly increases the risk of heart problems when combined with birth control pills, especially in women over 35. Do not use this medication if you smoke heavily.
  • Reduced Effectiveness: The pill may be less effective if you miss doses, experience vomiting or diarrhea, or take certain other medications. Use backup contraception if needed.
  • Gallbladder Disease: Use of hormonal contraceptives may increase the risk of gallbladder disease, particularly within the first few years.
  • Liver Issues: In rare cases, liver problems or tumors can occur. Watch for signs such as yellowing of the skin/eyes, abdominal pain, or dark urine, and report them to your doctor.
  • Fertility After Stopping: Fertility typically returns after discontinuing the pill. Wait for one normal cycle before trying to conceive to accurately date the pregnancy.
  • Depression: If you have a history of depression, this medication may worsen symptoms. Monitor your mood and contact your doctor if changes occur.
  • Diabetes: This medication may affect blood sugar levels. People with diabetes or a family history should monitor their glucose levels closely.
  • Eye Problems: Some women may notice vision changes or discomfort with contact lenses due to fluid buildup in the eyes.
  • STI Protection: This medication does not protect against HIV or other sexually transmitted infections. Use condoms to reduce your risk.
  • Surgery: Let your healthcare providers know you’re on this medication if you’re planning surgery. It may need to be paused to reduce clotting risk during recovery.

Does it have any side effects?

Like many medications, Linessa can cause side effects, which may range from mild to severe and can be temporary or long-lasting. Not everyone will experience side effects, but if you're concerned, speak with your doctor to weigh the risks and benefits.

    Common side effects may include:
  • Abdominal cramping or bloating
  • Heartburn
  • Painful periods
  • Diarrhea
  • Acne (usually improves after 3 months or if already present)
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Signs of a blood clot (e.g., chest pain, coughing blood)
  • Heart attack symptoms (chest pressure, nausea)
  • Severe allergic reaction (e.g., breathing difficulty, vomiting)
  • Stroke symptoms (slurred speech, vision changes)
Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual or concerning, contact your doctor.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Always inform your healthcare provider about all prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications, vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are taking.

Before starting desogestrel/ethinyl estradiol, be sure to discuss if you are using any of the following:

  • Bosentan, a medication for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH)
  • Griseofulvin, used to treat fungal infections
  • St. John’s wort, a supplement often used for depression
  • Medications for AIDS, HIV, or hepatitis C
  • Seizure treatments such as Oxcarbazepine (Oxtellar XR), Phenytoin (Dilantin, etc.), Carbamazepine (Carbatrol, etc.), Felbamate, Lamotrigine (Lamictal), or Topiramate (Topamax)
  • Rifampin (Rifadin), commonly used to treat tuberculosis
  • Barbiturates like Phenobarbital, Butalbital, or Primidone, which may be prescribed for migraines, insomnia, or seizures
  • Tetracycline antibiotics such as Minocycline, Doxycycline, or Sarecycline (Seysara), used for infections or other conditions

Other medications may also affect how Desogestrel/Ethinyl Estradiol works or be affected by it. Always tell your healthcare provider about any medicines you are currently taking or have recently used. This list may not include all possible interactions. Always consult your healthcare provider for complete information.

How should I store it?

Store Linessa at room temperature, between 68°F and 77°F (20°C to 25°C). Keep Linessa in a cool, dry place. Only take a tablet out of the blister pack when you are ready to use it.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you or someone else has taken too much Linessa, seek immediate medical attention or go to the nearest emergency room.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Pregnancy: Do not take Linessa if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. If you find out you are pregnant while taking it, stop immediately and contact your doctor.

Breastfeeding: Linessa can pass into breast milk and may reduce milk production. Inform your provider if you are breastfeeding or plan to, as they will advise whether this medication is appropriate during that time.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
