Why is Macrodantin prescribed?

Macrodantin is an antibiotic used to treat or prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by specific bacteria in adults and in children aged one month and older.

What does it do?

Nitrofurantoin works by preventing certain bacteria from producing proteins and other essential substances they need to grow and multiply, effectively killing them.

How should I take it?

It is typically taken with food to enhance absorption and minimize stomach upset. Swallow the capsule whole; do not chew, crush, or break it.

What if I missed a dose?

Take Macrodantin as soon as you remember. However, if it’s nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Macrodantin?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history.

Do not take Macrodantin if you are allergic to it or if you have:

  • Severe kidney disease
  • Urination difficulties (little or no urination)
  • A history of jaundice or liver problems caused by Macrodantin

Avoid using Macrodantin during late pregnancy (from 38 weeks until delivery). Macrodantin should not be given to children younger than 1 month old.

Inform your doctor if you have or have ever had:

  • Anemia (low red blood cell count)
  • Diabetes
  • Liver problems
  • Kidney disease
  • Electrolyte imbalances or vitamin B deficiency
  • A genetic enzyme deficiency called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency
Do not breastfeed if your baby is under 1 month old or has glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency.

Does it have any side effects?

Macrodantin can, in rare cases, cause serious lung issues. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms: shortness of breath during physical activity, a dry or persistent cough, wheezing, chest pain or discomfort, or fever.

    Common side effects may include:
  • Lung or liver issues
  • Abnormal results in blood tests
  • Nausea or decreased appetite
  • Vertigo (a spinning feeling) or headache
  • Unusual or involuntary eye movements
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Pale skin or unusual weakness
  • Pain or burning during urination
  • Numbness, or burning sensations in your hands or feet
  • Severe abdominal pain or diarrhea that is watery or bloody (even if it appears weeks or months after your last dose)
  • Signs of liver issues such as pain in the upper right side of your abdomen, clay-colored stools, or yellowing of the skin or eyes
This is not a full list of possible side effects. Other reactions may occur. Always contact your doctor for medical advice about any side effects you experience.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, especially:
  • Probenecid
  • Sulfinpyrazone
This is not a complete list. Other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, or herbal supplements may interact with Macrodantin. Be sure to discuss all your current medicines with your healthcare provider.

How should I store it?

Keep the container tightly closed and store at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Protect the medication from light.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

Overdose symptom of Macrodantin is vomiting. Get emergency medical help as needed.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Pregnancy: Avoid taking nitrofurantoin at 38 weeks of pregnancy or later, as it may harm the unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. They will determine whether nitrofurantoin is safe for you during pregnancy.

Breastfeeding: Do not use nitrofurantoin while breastfeeding an infant under one month old or a baby with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency without first consulting doctor. Nitrofurantoin may be harmful in these cases. Always inform your provider if you are currently breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
