Why is Movantik prescribed?

Movantik (Naloxegol) is prescribed to treat opioid-induced constipation (OIC) in adults with chronic, non-cancer pain who have been on opioid pain medication for at least four weeks.

What does it do?

Movantik functions by blocking specific receptors in your intestines, preventing opioid pain medications from attaching to those sites. Typically, opioids bind to certain receptors in the digestive system, causing a slowdown in intestinal activity and making bowel movements difficult. By blocking these receptors in the intestines, Movantik allows for more regular bowel movements without compromising pain relief in other parts of the body.

How should I take it?

The recommended dosage Movantik (Naloxegol) is 25 mg once daily in the morning. If you experience side effects, your doctor may reduce the dose to 12.5 mg once daily. Take Movantik on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after your first meal of the day.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, if it is more than 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take only the next scheduled dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Movantik?

Before taking Movantik, it's important to be aware of certain precautions to ensure the medication is safe and effective for you.

  • Do not take Movantik if you are allergic to Naloxegol
  • Tell your doctor if you have any stomach or bowel problems (such as diverticulitis, Crohn's disease, cancer), kidney or liver problems, or a history of gastrointestinal obstruction.
  • Movantik is not approved for individuals under 18 years old.
  • If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding, consult your doctor. Movantik can cause opioid withdrawal symptoms in newborns

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
    Common side effects may include:
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Flatulence (gas)
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Diarrhea that leads to dehydration or hospitalization
  • Opioid withdrawal symptoms such as sweating, chills, anxiety, irritability, or yawning
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Fainting
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • Tear in the stomach or intestinal wall (perforation)
This is not a complete list of all possible side effects, and others may occur. It's important to seek medical advice for any unusual symptoms or concerns from your healthcare provider.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Movantik (Naloxegol) can interact with many other medications. It's important to inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking. Some known interactions include:
  • Antifungal medications such as azole antifungals
  • Certain antibiotics like clarithromycin and telithromycin
  • Heart medications such as nicardipine and quinidine
  • Antiviral medications
  • St. John's Wort
  • Carbamazepine
  • Grapefruit and grapefruit juice
  • Other opioid antagonists
  • Verapamil
This list is not exhaustive, and all possible drug interactions are not listed here. Inform your doctor of all the medications you are using as it may interact with Movantik (Naloxegol).

How should I store it?

Store the tablets in their original container until you are ready to use them. Keep the medication at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Lastly, ensure that the medication is kept out of reach of children and pets.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you believe that you or someone else has overdosed on Movantik (Naloxegol), it is vital to seek immediate medical attention as GI adverse reactions can occur even as early as 1 to 2 days. Call your local emergency number or go to the nearest hospital.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Movantik (Naloxegol) should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks, as it may harm your unborn baby. Inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

For breastfeeding, it's unknown if Naloxegol passes into breast milk. However, it's generally not recommended for nursing mothers, especially those with infants less than 6 months old, due to the theoretical risk of opioid withdrawal symptoms in the infant.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
