Why is Renagel prescribed?

Renagel (Sevelamer Hydrochloride) is a phosphate-binding medication designed to regulate serum phosphorus levels in individuals undergoing dialysis for chronic kidney disease (CKD). It helps reduce the risk of hypocalcemia (low calcium levels) associated with elevated phosphorus. By binding to phosphate in food, Renagel prevents its absorption into the bloodstream, reducing phosphorus levels and helping to prevent complications related to kidney disease.

What does it do?

Renagel works by binding phosphate in the digestive tract, preventing its absorption into the bloodstream. It contains sevelamer hydrochloride, a non-absorbed polymer that interacts with phosphate from food, forming an insoluble complex that is then excreted in the stool. This helps reduce serum phosphorus levels, which is crucial for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on dialysis, as high phosphorus levels can lead to complications like bone disorders and cardiovascular issues.

How should I take it?

Renagel should be taken with meals to effectively bind phosphate from food. The recommended starting dose depends on your serum phosphorus levels:

  • If serum phosphorus is equal to 5.5–7.5 mg/dL = 800 mg three times daily with meals.
  • If serum phosphorus is equal to 7.5–9.0 mg/dL = 1600 mg three times daily with meals.
  • If serum phosphorus is greater than 9.0 mg/dL = 1600 mg three times daily with meals.
If switching from calcium acetate, the dose is adjusted accordingly. Dose titration is done every two weeks based on phosphorus levels, aiming for less than or equal to 5.5 mg/dL.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose of Renagel, take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is approaching, skip the missed one and continue following your usual schedule. Avoid taking extra or double doses to compensate for the missed dose. Since Renagel works by binding phosphate from food, taking it with meals is crucial for effectiveness.

What are the special precautions before taking Renagel?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history.

Before taking Renagel, here are several important precautions to keep in mind:

  • Do not take Razadyne if you are allergic to Sevelamer or any of the ingredients in the medication.
  • Disclose all your medical conditions to your doctor, particularly if you have:
    • Swallowing disorders
    • Gastrointestinal motility disorders
    • Stomach or intestinal disorder
    • Recently undergone stomach or intestinal surgery
  • Renagel is contraindicated in patients with bowel obstruction.
  • Do not give this medication to others, even if they have similar condition, as it may pose health risks.
  • The safety of this medication during pregnancy and breastfeeding remains uncertain. If you are pregnant or nursing, consult your doctor for guidance before taking it.
  • Avoid use if you have low phosphate levels, as Renagel is designed to lower phosphorus.
  • Avoid taking any other drugs within one hour before or three hours after using Renagel, as it may interact with other medications, reducing their efficacy.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
    Common side effects may include:

This is not a complete list of all possible side effects, and others may occur. For more information about side effects, please consult your healthcare provider.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Renagel (Sevelamer Hydrochloride) can interact with various medications, so it's important to check for potential interactions before taking it with another drug. Combining Renagel with other medications reduce their effectiveness or cause adverse effects.
  • Digoxin
  • Enalapril
  • Metoprolol
  • Ciprofloxacin
  • Levothyroxine
  • Warfarin
This is not a complete list of all the potential drug interactions, always consult your doctor or pharmacist before combining Renagel with other medications to ensure safety.

How should I store it?

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you suspect an overdose of Renagel (Sevelamer Hydrochloride), it's important to act quickly and seek immediate medical attention. Contact emergency services or go to the nearest hospital. While Renagel is not systemically absorbed, excessive intake may lead to severe gastrointestinal issues, including intestinal obstruction or perforation.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
