Why is Renvela prescribed?

Renvela (Sevelamer Carbonate) is a phosphate binder used to control serum phosphorus levels in people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on dialysis. Since CKD patients often struggle to remove excess phosphorus from their bodies, Renvela aids in managing phosphorus levels by binding to it in the digestive tract, preventing its absorption into the body.

What does it do?

Renvela helps manage phosphate levels by attaching to phosphate in the digestive tract, blocking its absorption into the bloodstream. Since high phosphate levels can be dangerous for people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on dialysis, Renvela helps control serum phosphorus and reduces complications like bone disorders and cardiovascular issues.

How should I take it?

Renvela should be taken with meals, as this allows it to effectively bind to phosphate from food in your digestive tract.
  • If serum phosphorus is equal to 5.5–7.5 mg/dL = 800 mg three times daily with meals.
  • If serum phosphorus is equal to 7.5–9.0 mg/dL = 1600 mg three times daily with meals.
  • If serum phosphorus is greater than 9.0 mg/dL = 1600 mg three times daily with meals.

To achieve the best results, your doctor may modify your dosage from time to time. Be sure to follow their instructions and avoid taking the medication in higher or lower amounts or for longer than prescribed. If using Renvela powder, dissolve it in water before consumption: mix the 0.8-gram packet with at least 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of water, and the 2.4-gram packet with at least 2 ounces (4 tablespoons) of water.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose of Renvela, take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is approaching, skip the missed one and continue following your usual schedule. Avoid taking extra or double doses to compensate for the missed dose. Stay consistent with your dosing schedule to help keep your phosphorus levels balanced.

What are the special precautions before taking Renvela?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history.

Before taking Renvela, here are several important precautions to keep in mind:

  • Do not take Renvela if you are allergic to Sevelamer Carbonate/Hydrochloride or any of the ingredients in the medication.
  • Do not take Renvela if you have a history of bowel obstruction or severe digestive issues.
  • Disclose all your medical conditions to your doctor, particularly if you have:
    • Swallowing disorders
    • Gastrointestinal motility disorders
    • Stomach or intestinal disorder
    • Recently undergone esophagus, stomach, or intestines surgery
  • Avoid sharing this medication with others, even if they have a similar condition, as it could lead to unintended health risks or complications.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider for guidance on its safe use.
  • Some medications, such as ciprofloxacin and mycophenolate mofetil, should be taken separately from Renvela to avoid reduced effectiveness.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.

    Common side effects may include:
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Nausea and vomiting
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Severe constipation
  • Swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat
This is not a complete list of all possible side effects, and others may occur. For more information about side effects, please consult your healthcare provider.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Renvela (Sevelamer Carbonate) can interact with various medications, so it's important to check for potential interactions before taking it with another drug. Combining Renagel with other medications reduce their effectiveness or cause adverse effects.

Before taking Renvela, consult your doctor if you are using any of the following medications:

  • Calcium-based phosphate binders
  • Ciprofloxacin
  • Mycophenolate mofetil
  • Levothyroxine
This is not a complete list of all the potential drug interactions, always consult your doctor or pharmacist before combining Renvela with other medications to ensure safety.

How should I store it?

Renvela should be stored in its original container at room temperature, ideally between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Keep it away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children and pets.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you suspect an overdose of Renvela (Sevelamer Carbonate), it's important to act quickly and seek immediate medical attention. Contact emergency services or go to the nearest hospital. Overdose symptoms may include severe stomach pain, vomiting, difficulty breathing, or extreme weakness.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Renvela (Sevelamer Carbonate) is not absorbed by the body and is unlikely to reach the baby during pregnancy or pass through breast milk while breastfeeding. However, it is essential to inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, so they can provide appropriate guidance on its use.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
