Why is Saphris prescribed?

Saphris (Asenapine) is an atypical antipsychotic medication prescribed to treat various mental and mood disorders, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

What does it do?

This medication works by helping to restore the balance of specific natural chemicals in the brain.

How should I take it?

Keep the tablet in its blister pack until you're ready to take it. Using dry hands, carefully remove the tablet and place it under your tongue. Do not swallow the sublingual tablet. Allow it to dissolve under your tongue without chewing. Avoid eating or drinking for 10 minutes after the tablet has dissolved.

What if I missed a dose?

Take Saphris as soon as you remember, but if it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and do not take two doses at once.

What are the special precautions before taking Saphris?

You should not use Saphris if you are allergic to Asenapine or if you have severe liver disease. Asenapine may increase the risk of fatality in older adults with dementia-related psychosis and is not approved for this use.

To ensure Saphris is safe for you, inform your doctor if you have any of the following:

  • Breast cancer
  • Heart problems
  • High blood pressure
  • History of heart attack or stroke
  • Diabetes (Asenapine may increase blood sugar levels)
  • Seizures
  • Liver disease
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Low white blood cell count
  • Long QT syndrome (either personally or in your family history)

Saphris should not be used in children under 10 years old. It is not approved for the treatment of schizophrenia in individuals under 18 years old.

Saphris may lead to high blood sugar (hyperglycemia). Symptoms can include increased thirst, frequent urination, hunger, dry mouth, fruity breath odor, drowsiness, dry skin, and blurred vision. If you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar levels regularly while taking Saphris.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
    Common side effects may include:
  • Constipation
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Numbness or tingling in the mouth
  • Dry mouth
  • Difficulty sleeping (insomnia)
  • Restlessness
  • Upset stomach
  • Weight gain
  • Saphris may also cause muscle or nervous system issues (extrapyramidal symptoms - EPS). Notify your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • Anxiety, agitation, or jitteriness
  • Drooling
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Shaking (tremor)
  • Shuffling walk
  • Stiff muscles
  • Severe muscle spasms or cramps
  • Seek immediate medical attention or call your doctor if you experience any of the following serious side effects:

  • Severe eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights.
  • Serious heart symptoms like fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in your chest; or sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, shortness of breath; or fainting.
  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, weakness in arms or legs, difficulty walking, very stiff muscles, loss of coordination, unsteady feeling, high fever, excessive sweating, or tremors.
  • This list does not include all possible side effects, and others may occur. Consult your doctor for more information about side effects.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Using Saphris with other medications that cause drowsiness or slow down your breathing can lead to serious side effects or even death.

Before taking Saphris, consult your doctor if you are using the following:

  • Drugs for anxiety or seizures
  • Opioid medications
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Sleeping pills
  • Other medications, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, as well as vitamins and herbal supplements, may interact with Asenapine. Be sure to inform your doctor about all the medicines you are currently taking and any new medications you begin or stop using.

    How should I store it?

Store the medication at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Keep all medications out of reach of children and pets.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If someone has overdosed and is experiencing severe symptoms such as fainting or difficulty breathing, contact your doctor or go to the emergency department immediately.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Saphris should only be used during pregnancy if prescribed by your doctor. Babies born to mothers who have taken this medication in the last 3 months of pregnancy may experience symptoms such as muscle stiffness or shakiness, drowsiness, difficulty feeding or breathing, or excessive crying. If you observe any of these symptoms in your newborn during the first month, contact your doctor. It is unclear whether this medication passes into breast milk, best to consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
