Why is Stribild prescribed?

Stribild is prescribed as a complete regimen for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and pediatric patients 12 years and older who have no prior antiretroviral treatment history or to replace an existing regimen in those who are virologically suppressed. It is not approved for treating chronic hepatitis B, and discontinuation of certain components may lead to severe exacerbations of hepatitis B. Patients should undergo renal function tests before and during treatment.

What does it do?

Stribild works by preventing HIV replication at multiple stages through its four active ingredients:

  • Elvitegravir, an integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI), blocks the virus from integrating its genetic material into human cells.
  • Cobicistat enhances elvitegravir’s effectiveness by slowing its breakdown.
  • Emtricitabine, a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI), disrupts HIV’s ability to copy its genetic material.
  • Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NtRTI), further inhibits the replication process.
Together, these components help reduce HIV levels in the body, support immune function, and lower the risk of HIV-related complications.

How should I take it?

Stribild should be taken once daily with food to ensure proper absorption. Each tablet contains four active ingredients that work together to suppress HIV. The usual dose is one tablet per day for adults and children 12 years and older who weigh at least 35 kg.

This medication is not recommended for patients with creatinine clearance below 70 mL/min. Always consult your healthcare provider for proper use of the medication to ensure safety.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose of Stribild, take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is approaching, skip the missed one and continue following your usual schedule. Avoid taking extra or double doses to compensate for the missed dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Stribild?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history. Before taking Stribild, here are several important precautions to keep in mind:

  • Avoid taking Stribild if you're allergic to Cobisistat, Elvitegravir, Emtrisitabin, Tenofovir, or any of the ingredients in the medication.
  • Disclose all your current or past medical conditions to your doctor, particularly if you have hepatitis B, or kidney disease.
  • This medication may cause decreases in bone mineral density (BMD), so monitoring is advised for those at risk of osteoporosis.
  • Do not share this medication with others, even if they have a similar condition, as it could lead to unforeseen health risks or adverse reactions.
  • If you are pregnant, considering pregnancy, or breastfeeding, consult your doctor to understand the potential risks and benefits of taking this medication.
  • Discontinue if symptoms of lactic acidosis or severe liver toxicity appear.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
    Common side effects may include:
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Bone problems
  • Worsening Hepatitis B
  • Kidney Issues
  • Immune Reconstitution Syndrome
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
This is not a complete list of potential side effects, and additional reactions may occur. For detailed information and medical guidance, consult your healthcare provider.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Stribild can interact with various medications, so it's important to check for potential interactions before taking it with another drug. Some interactions may increase side effects or reduce effectiveness.

  • Alfuzosin
  • Rifampin
  • St. John's wort
  • Antipsychotic medication
  • Seizure medication
This is not a complete list of all the potential drug interactions, always consult your doctor or pharmacist before combining Stribild with other medications to ensure safety.

How should I store it?

Stribild should be stored in its original container at room temperature, ideally between 20°C and 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Keep it away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children and pets. Always refer to the medication's packaging for any specific storage guidelines and avoid using it beyond the expiration date.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you suspect an overdose of Stribild (Cobisistat/Elvitegravir/Emtrisitabin/Tenofovir), it's important to act quickly and seek immediate medical attention. Contact emergency services or go to the nearest hospital. Overdose symptoms may include severe nausea, vomiting, dizziness, or difficulty breathing.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Stribild is not recommended during pregnancy because drug exposure decreases in later trimesters, which may reduce its effectiveness. If pregnancy occurs while taking Stribild, healthcare providers may consider switching to an alternative regimen.

For breastfeeding, it is not advised because tenofovir, emtricitabine, and elvitegravir can pass into breast milk, potentially affecting the infant. HIV-positive mothers are generally advised not to breastfeed to prevent transmission of the virus. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider for guidance on its use to ensure safety for both you and your baby.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
