Why is Symtuza prescribed?

Symtuza is prescribed as a complete antiretroviral regimen for the treatment of HIV-1 infection. This medication is prescribed for adults and children weighing at least 40 kg (approximately 88 lb) who are either newly diagnosed with HIV or currently undergoing antiretroviral therapy with an undetectable viral load and no known resistance to its key ingredients.

What does it do?

Symtuza is a combination therapy designed to combat HIV by targeting multiple stages of the virus’s lifecycle. It contains four active agents:
  • Darunavir, a protease inhibitor that prevents the maturation of new virus particles.
  • Cobicistat, a pharmacokinetic enhancer that boosts Darunavir’s effectiveness by slowing its breakdown.
  • Emtricitabine with Tenofovir Alafenamide, both nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) that block HIV’s ability to convert its RNA into DNA, preventing integration into the host genome.

Together, these components work synergistically to reduce viral load and support effective HIV management.

How should I take it?

Symtuza should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Take one tablet orally once a day with food to ensure optimal absorption. If you have difficulty swallowing the whole tablet, you may split it using a tablet cutter. However, it is important to immediately take the entire dose after splitting so that the dosing remains consistent.

What if I missed a dose?

If you realize you've missed a dose within 12 hours of your usual schedule, take it as soon as possible with food. However, if more than 12 hours have passed, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing routine. Avoid taking a double dose to compensate for the missed one.

What are the special precautions before taking Symtuza?

Before taking Symtuza, here are several important precautions to keep in mind:

Do not take Symtuza if you're allergic to Darunavir, Cobicistat, Emtricitabine, Tenofovir alafenamide, or any of the ingredients in the medication.

Disclose all your current or past medical conditions to your doctor, particularly if you have:

  • Allergy to sulfa drugs
  • Bleeding disorder
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Diabetes

Symtuza helps manage HIV by keeping the infection under control but does not provide a cure. Additionally, it does not protect against or prevent the transmission of other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as herpes, gonorrhea, or chlamydia.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
    Common side effects may include:
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Skin rash
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Diabetes or high blood sugar
  • Severe skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
  • Hepatitis
  • Lactic acidosis
  • Difficulty breathing
This is not a complete list of potential side effects, and additional reactions may occur. For detailed information and medical guidance, consult your healthcare provider.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Symtuza can interact with various medications, so it's important to check for potential interactions before taking it with another drug. Some interactions may increase side effects or reduce effectiveness.

Before taking Symtuza, consult your doctor if you are using any of the following medications:

  • Statins
  • Rifampin
  • Heart medications
  • Seizure medications
  • St. John’s wort
  • NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)
This is not a complete list of all the potential drug interactions, always consult your doctor or pharmacist before combining Symtuza with other medications to ensure safety.

How should I store it?

Symtuza should be stored in its original container at room temperature, ideally between 20°C and 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Keep the medication in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, and ensure it is kept out of reach of children and pets.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you suspect an overdose of Symtuza, it's important to act quickly and seek immediate medical attention. Contact emergency services or go to the nearest hospital. Overdose symptoms may include severe nausea, vomiting, dizziness, irregular heartbeat, or difficulty breathing.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Symtuza is not recommended during pregnancy because its effectiveness may be reduced due to lower drug exposure levels. While for breastfeeding, the recommendation is to avoid it while using Symtuza. Since tenofovir alafenamide, one of its ingredients, can transfer into breast milk, and the potential risk to infants remains unclear, HIV-positive mothers are typically advised against breastfeeding to minimize the chances of transmitting the virus.

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider for guidance on its use to ensure safety for both you and your baby.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
