Why is Tobrex prescribed?

Tobrex is prescribed to treat bacterial infections of the eye, such as conjunctivitis (pink eye) and blepharitis (eyelid inflammation). It’s effective against a wide range of bacteria that commonly infect the external parts of the eye.

What does it do?

Tobrex contains tobramycin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic. It works by blocking bacterial protein synthesis, which stops the bacteria from growing and eventually kills them.

How should I take it?

Always follow your doctor’s instructions or the directions on the product label when taking this medication. Instill 1–2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 4 hours for mild to moderate infections. For severe infections, it may be used every hour initially, then reduced as symptoms improve. Always wash your hands before and after use and avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye or any surface. For eye ointment solution, apply a half-inch ribbon into the affected eye(s) 2–3 times daily, or every 3–4 hours for severe cases.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose of Tobrex, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if your next scheduled dose is approaching, skip the missed dose and proceed with your usual dosing routine. Do not take extra or double doses to make up for the missed dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Tobrex?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history.

Before taking Tobrex, here are several important precautions to keep in mind:

  • Do not take Tobrex if you're allergic to Tobramycin or any of the ingredients in the medication.
  • Disclose all your current or past medical conditions to your doctor, particularly if you have aminoglycoside allergy or an allergy to a group of antibiotics.
  • Avoid wearing contact lenses while using tobramycin ophthalmic, as the medication may contain preservatives or ingredients that can irritate the eyes or be absorbed by the lenses, potentially reducing effectiveness or causing discomfort.
  • Never share this medication with others, even if their condition seems similar, as it could lead to unforeseen health risks or harmful side effects.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
    Common side effects may include:
  • Eye irritation
  • Redness of the eye or eyelid
  • Swelling or puffiness of the eyelids
  • Blurred vision
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat
  • Severe eye discomfort or pain
  • Worsening redness or swelling
  • Signs of a secondary infection
This is not a complete list of potential side effects, and additional reactions may occur. For detailed information and medical guidance, consult your healthcare provider.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Tobrex (Tobramycin) generally has a low risk of drug interactions because it's applied directly to the eye and very little of it enters the bloodstream.

Before taking Tobrex, consult your doctor if you are using any of the following medications:

  • Amikacin
  • Amikacin liposome
  • Gentamicin
  • Other aminoglycoside antibiotics
This is not a complete list of all the potential drug interactions, always consult your doctor or pharmacist before combining Tobrex with other medications to ensure safety.

How should I store it?

Tobrex should be kept in its original container and stored at room temperature, ideally between 36°F to 77°F (2°C to 25°C), to maintain its effectiveness.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you suspect an overdose of Tobrex (Tobramycin), it's important to act quickly and seek immediate medical attention. Contact emergency services or go to the nearest hospital. Overdose symptoms may include severe eye irritation, swelling, dizziness, vertigo, or vision changes.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Tobrex (Tobramycin) is generally considered safe with caution for pregnant and breastfeeding women, but it should only be used if clearly needed and prescribed by a healthcare provider. Since Tobrex is applied to the eye, systemic absorption is minimal, but as a precaution, it’s best to use it only if the benefits outweigh the risks.

While for breastfeeding mothers, very little amounts of tobramycin are expected to pass into breast milk when used as eye drops, and experts generally agree that topical ocular use is unlikely to harm a nursing infant.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
