Why is Zejula prescribed?

Zejula is a prescription medication used in adults as a maintenance treatment for advanced ovarian cancer, fallopian tube cancer, or primary peritoneal cancer. It is intended for patients who have either an abnormal BRCA gene or a positive tumor test indicating homologous recombination deficiency (HRD). Zejula is used after the cancer has shown a complete or partial response to initial treatment with platinum-based chemotherapy.

What does it do?

Zejula is a type of medication called a poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitor. PARP is a protein that helps cancer cells repair damaged DNA, allowing them to survive and grow. Zejula works by blocking PARP, preventing the repair of DNA in cancer cells, which ultimately leads to their death.

How should I take it?

Take Zejula once daily at the same time, with or without food, swallowing the capsules whole (without crushing, chewing, or splitting), and consider taking it at bedtime to help reduce nausea.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose of Zejula or vomit after taking it, do not take an extra dose; simply take your next dose at the scheduled time.

What are the special precautions before taking Zejula?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history.

Before starting Zejula, inform your doctor about all of your medical conditions, especially if you:

  • Have liver issues
  • Have heart problems
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Are allergic to FD&C Yellow No. 5 (Tartrazine) or aspirin. Zejula capsules contain FD&C Yellow No. 5, which may cause allergic reactions, including bronchial asthma, in some individuals, particularly those allergic to aspirin.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
    Common side effects may include:
  • Abdominal pain
  • Skin rash
  • Constipation
  • Loss of appetite
  • Shortness of breath
  • Muscle and back pain
  • Urinary tract infection
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Bone Marrow Problems (MDS or AML): Zejula has been linked to myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML), especially in patients previously treated with chemotherapy or certain other cancer medicines. These are serious blood disorders that can be life-threatening. Zejula treatment will be stopped if MDS or AML develops.
  • High Blood Pressure: Zejula can cause or worsen high blood pressure, which may become serious. Your doctor will check your blood pressure and heart rate.
  • Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome (PRES): PRES is a rare brain condition that may occur during Zejula treatment. Contact your doctor immediately.
    • Confusion
    • Vision changes
    • Seizures (with or without high blood pressure)

If you experience certain side effects, your doctor may adjust your Zejula dose, pause treatment, or stop it altogether. Always inform your healthcare provider of any unusual symptoms. Regular monitoring can help manage these risks effectively.

This is not a complete list of side effects. For more details, speak with your doctor or pharmacist. Contact your doctor for medical advice if you notice any side effects.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Always inform your doctor about any prescription or over-the-counter medications, minerals, vitamins, herbal products, and supplements you are using.

Zejula can affect the blood levels of certain medications, so make sure to tell your doctor about all the medicines you are currently taking or have recently used.

This may not be a complete list of potential drug interactions with Zejula, so always consult your doctor for more information.

    How should I store it?

Store Zejula at room temperature, between 68° to 77°F (20° to 25°C), and keep it out of reach of children.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

Pregnancy: Zejula can harm an unborn baby, so it’s important to inform your doctor if you're pregnant or planning to become pregnant. You should not be pregnant before starting Zejula. If you are able to become pregnant, use effective birth control during treatment and for six months after your last dose.

Breastfeeding: Do not take Zejula while breastfeeding or for one month after your final dose. It's unclear if Zejula passes into breast milk. Be sure to let your doctor know if you're breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed..

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
