Why is Zykadia prescribed?

Zykadia is a prescription medication used to treat non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) caused by a defect in the anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene that has spread to other parts of the body.

What does it do?

Zykadia (Ceritinib) is a kinase inhibitor that blocks the activity of a protein called anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK). ALK is present in both normal and cancer cells and signals them to grow. Cancer cells often have higher levels of ALK, which can cause them to grow faster than normal cells. By blocking ALK, Zykadia (Ceritinib) helps prevent cancer cells from growing and spreading.

How should I take it?

Take Zykadia once daily with food; if you vomit after taking it, do not take an extra dose and simply continue with your next scheduled dose.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose of Zykadia, take it as soon as you remember. However, if your next dose is due within 12 hours, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time.

What are the special precautions before taking Zykadia?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history.

Before taking Zykadia, inform your doctor about all your medical conditions, including if you:

  • Have liver problems
  • Have or have had pancreatitis
  • Have diabetes or high blood sugar
  • Have heart issues, including long QT syndrome
  • Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as Zykadia can harm an unborn baby. Females who can become pregnant should use effective birth control during treatment and for 6 months after stopping Zykadia. Discuss birth control options with your doctor, and notify them immediately if you become or suspect you are pregnant.
  • Males with female partners who can become pregnant should use condoms during treatment and for 3 months after stopping Zykadia.
  • Breastfeeding or planning to do so. It is unknown if Zykadia passes into breast milk, so do not breastfeed during treatment and for 2 weeks after stopping Zykadia.

Do not drink grapefruit juice or eat grapefruit while taking Zykadia, as it can increase the amount of the medication in your blood to harmful levels.

Additionally, avoid prolonged sun exposure during treatment, as Zykadia may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, increasing the risk of sunburn. Protect your skin by using sunscreen and wearing protective clothing.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
    Serious side effects may include:
  • High blood sugar (hyperglycemia): People with diabetes, glucose intolerance, or those taking corticosteroids are at higher risk. Your doctor will monitor your blood sugar before and during treatment. Contact your doctor if you notice symptoms like blurred vision, difficulty concentrating, frequent urination, headaches, or fruity-smelling breath.
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas): This condition can be severe and even fatal. Symptoms include upper abdominal pain that may spread to the back and worsen after eating. Your doctor will check pancreatic enzyme levels before and during treatment.
  • Gastrointestinal problems: These include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach pain. Follow your doctor’s guidance and seek medical help if symptoms are severe.
  • Liver problems: Zykadia can cause liver damage. Monthly liver function tests will be conducted. Report symptoms such as itchy skin, yellowing of the skin or eyes, tiredness, abdominal pain on the right side, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, dark urine, or unusual bleeding or bruising immediately.
  • Lung problems (pneumonitis): Severe lung inflammation may occur, causing difficulty breathing, fever, and chest pain. Report new or worsening symptoms promptly.
  • Heart problems: Zykadia may cause irregular heartbeats or abnormal heart rates. Your doctor will monitor your heart and you should report dizziness, fainting, chest pain, or abnormal rhythms right away. Also inform your provider about any heart or blood pressure medications you are taking.
    Common side effects may include:
  • Gastrointestinal issues
  • Decreased appetite
  • Tiredness
  • Weight loss
These are not all the possible side effects. For more details, speak with your doctor or pharmacist. Contact your doctor for medical advice if you experience any side effects.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Some drug interactions may cause serious or life-threatening reactions when administered together. Immediately inform your doctor if you are taking Zykadia with any of the following medications:

Medicines that may increase side effects with Zykadia:

  • HIV/AIDS treatments (e.g., Saquinavir)
  • Certain antibiotics (e.g., Telithromycin)
  • Antifungal medications (e.g., Ketoconazole, Posaconazole)

Medicines that may reduce Zykadia’s effectiveness:

  • Anti-epileptic drugs (e.g., Phenytoin)
  • St. John’s Wort (herbal remedy for depression)
  • Tuberculosis treatments (e.g., Rifampicin, Rifabutin)

Medicines whose side effects may be increased by Zykadia:

  • Gout treatment (e.g., Colchicine)
  • Cancer treatments (e.g., Topotecan)
  • Cholesterol-lowering drugs (e.g., Pravastatin)
  • Blood thinners (e.g., Warfarin)
  • Heart medications (e.g., Digoxin)
These medicines may need to be used with caution or avoided while on Zykadia. Your doctor may suggest alternatives if necessary. Also, inform your doctor if you start any new medications while taking Zykadia.

How should I store it?

Store Zykadia at room temperature, between 68°F and 77°F (20°C to 25°C). Keep Zykadia and all medications out of reach of children.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you accidentally take an overdose of tablets, or if someone else takes your medicine by mistake, seek medical advice from a doctor or hospital immediately, as treatment may be required.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Pregnancy: The safety of this medication during pregnancy is unknown. It should only be used if the potential benefits outweigh the risks. If you become pregnant while taking this medication, contact your doctor right away.

Breastfeeding: It is unclear whether Ceritinib passes into breast milk. If you are breastfeeding while using this medication, it may affect your baby. Consult your doctor to decide if you should continue breastfeeding.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
